Reddit Wants All Of Your Time

Words:

January 17, 2019

There are never enough hours in the day to do everything you need to. But somehow, there are plenty of hours for doing the things you don't need to do. Procrastination is almost its own industry, with apps and books and podcasts all claiming to help you be more productive. So in advance, we apologise, but we've just found some amazing ways to waste time (and learn things).

Writing this took much longer than it should. Never get high off your own supply they say (at least Biggie said that). Well it's hard to write without research and when that research involves the subreddit r/interestingasfuck then it's a rabbit hole lined with mechanical dolphins driven by humans that are able to emulate their movements in water or about lumberjacks with dizzying accuracy lopping off huge chunks of trees perfectly. It's everything you didn't know that you needed to see.

If you've got deadlines, dissertations, a thesis or upcoming appointments. Don't click here. If you have a date or need to get to the shops before they close, you shouldn't click here either. Reddit has always been a vacuum for time so we thought, very sincerely, that we'd compile a list of the weirdest and most interesting ones. This is the pinnacle of human endeavour displayed in images, short videos and GIFs.

Reddit Wants All Of Your Time

1. r/nonononoYES

You know exactly what this is, don't you? No? Try saying it out loud. That's it. It's that horrible feeling when something bad is about to happen but right at the last minute comes good. Of all the subreddits about to be listed, this one probably rates highest for satisfaction. Catch it here.

2. r/ holdmybeer

This is defined as the catchphrase used before attempting a dangerous or ill-advised stunt. Basically it's people that don't want to be second-bested (sometimes under the influence of alcohol, but not necessarily) that think they can do better. Click here to laugh at other people's audacity in the face of danger.

3. r/FellowKids

Why is your cap on backwards? You're 35. There's always that adult trying to be down with the kids. Nah mean? Using all the k00l words but ending up just sounding lame. This beautiful subreddit shames all the brands that are trying too hard to catch the zeitgeist. They're exposed and rightfully so. Fully of joyous cringe, Check it out here.

4. r/ThomasTheDankEngine

This is exactly what it sounds like. A page dedicated to Thomas musical remixes (which are a lot catchier than you'd imagine) and memes. Guilty pleasure for all of those that grew up watching him. This is a place for reminiscing.

5. r/Creatures_of_earth

This too, is exactly what it sounds like. A subreddit dedicated to all the weird and wonderful creatures on Earth. The spellbinding collection does prompt a pause for reflection. The variety of life, the millions of species and colours and shapes, all collected here. Educational and very interesting.

6. r/ColorizedHistory

Looking back at the past, it's hard to imagine what life was like in colour. That might sound strange because of course it was in colour. But that isn't the image we see, it isn't what's been captured in that time. Without seeing something fully formed, it's hard to imagine it being so. Thankfully a bunch of talented people in this subreddit have deployed their skills and given us an amazing insight into what life might have been like.

7. r/FanTheories

Just like conspiracy theories in real life, this subreddit is dedicated to the theories of super-fans, linking seemingly disparate aspects of (usually) film universes together. As always, it's difficult to know whether their imaginations are actually more impressive than those behind the film, or if the films really do bear such a depth. In some cases it'll be a bit of both. Whatever the case, it's worth brewing a pot of coffee and getting stuck into.

8. r/Futurology

This is basically the technology subreddit on steroids. It's the sexier and more visionary version of what you might read elsewhere on the internet. Forget the new iPhone, you're more likely to hear about biohacking and exoskeletons in here.

9. r/instant_regret

There's no point in having subreddits about art and space travel if there isn't a place for you to detox and, as we promised, waste a lot of time. Alas, this is the very spot. The title probably tells you everything you need to know but if it wasn't clear enough it's when people, blinded by a moment of false confidence, do something that they instantly realise was absolutely the wrong thing to do.

10. r/LearnUselessTalents

This one really is great. You know the person at the party that always manages to do something really cool? Everyone likes them, they're really popular and you're wondering what you actually just witnessed when you hear the collective of jaws hitting the floor. They probably found it here. The secret's out. Now you can be that person.
